In an era where video on demand sites like Netflix are surging, many young talents are seeking to capture their audience with their free projects on YouTube. Most of these YouTube web series are produced with little to no budget but the quality of work by these young talents will keep you entertained. We have upon intensive research compiled the top 10 most watched series in Ghana.
Yolo (You only live once) is a sequel of the Ghanaian TV Series Things We Do for Love. It advises and directs the youth concerning the challenges they face in their sexuality. A television series produced and directed by Ivan Quashigah. The storyline currently revolves around a bunch of teenagers; Cyril, Drogba (Bro Charles) and George. Cyril, born as Aaron Adatsi, remains the center of the YOLO TV series and happens to be one of the characters tossed about in many situations, from relationships to hanging out with friends.
Directed by Isaac Agyapong, the storyline of Forkboys takes inspiration from Tulenkey’s fvckboys song featuring Eddie Khae. It literally depicts the promiscuous lifestyle of millennials. Habib. S who plays the main lead as ‘NAM1’ buying a new house and a car. He flaunts them on Social media and that leads to his closest friends who visited him, moving in to stay with him in his new apartment. One of the boys brings in Pamela who played the role of a Slay Queen getting bonked by all of the boys in the house.
Infatuations is a relatively newer series which has gained grounds impressively among young and old people. Created and directed by Caleb Pappoe, series focuses on the love life of young ones and how indecisive they can be even though they feel they know it all. The storyline is intelligently filled with suspense, drama and comedy. We see characters like Britney, Brian and Sena, displaying how confused they are in life with the likes of Chris and Acid seemingly smarter, preying on them.
4. WHAT’S UP ONLINE
What’s Up online is written and directed by Horla Manuvor Jnr and follows the lives of six young adults and how they met each other through social media. The series highlight the youth’s acceptance of social media and how relationships are built through online acquaintances. It throws light also on how useful social media can be used for good and not just fun and entertainment. With a good blend of humor and education and you are sure to be entertained and informed as well.
5. BRO CODE
Bro code, written and directed by Phanuel Owusu is quite an intriguing web series that focuses on activities that go on the hind sight of partners in amorous relationships. In bro code, you see Dick, shennel, Kunta etc playing various roles to depict near to exact happenings in 21st century relationships.
Opana is a story written by Umar Krupp and directed by Mawuli Mortsi. The story revolves around young Opana played by Omar Krupp with his poor mother the evergreen Kalsoum Sinari. Opana represents the hustle and struggles that comes with being a single mother
Hasl series (that is hai skuul life) is a production of CarlDuke ventures and directed by Charles D. Hayford that focuses on activities of students in Ghanaian high schools. You can hardly talk about high school in Ghana without the mention of love, comedy, drama and funny nicknames. We see characters like Sheila, Doris and Troskey depicting their roles almost perfectly.
8. YOUNG, WILD AND FREE
We have Young, wild and free. Also depicting the life of students on campus, the series was directed by Ricky Fame Innit and produced by Upstar films. It is a Ghanaian youth TV series that shows the lifestyle of youth on campus with their challenges with learning, friends, relationships and love. A bit of drama, comedy, action and suspense in each episode will keep you coming for more.
9. YES OR NO
Next is the all funny series Yes or No. Depicting purely the promiscuous lifestyle of Students, Yes or No series was produced by Lee Multimedia in a campus setting. Though some fans have argued that the sex scenes are unnecessarily exaggerated, it’s important to acknowledge the creativity involved.
10. 1 OVER 8
1 over 8 is an interesting and educative web series Produced by Bright Wirecko and directed by Hannah Acquah. The series seeks to show the lifestyle of students on university campuses. In the series, you will see Pappy, Pearl and the like exhibiting the exact characteristics of Ghanaian students. The romance, drama, comedy, heartbreaks and all come to play.
